Acanthus is an old ancient city-harbor, the jost significant in the North West area of Halkidiki, where the colony of the Andirons was. The founding of the city is estimated around the 7th century b.C which took position of a prehistoric settlement. The area of the city is approximately 600m on a coastal hilly line south east of Ierissos. There are still segments from the walls, which are found in the area of the city and one could possibly be from the citadel. An important part which is still from the archaic years (7th century b.C) till jost recent times (17th century) is Acanthus cemetery which stretches the distance till the coast line of Ierissos and has 9000 graves.
